Voter Registration

Any citizen of the United States over the age of 18, and who meets certain state requirements, may vote in Federal elections. This has not always been the case. When the United States first won its independence, there were many restrictions on who could vote. In some states, only white male landowners over the age of 21 could vote. Beginning in 1870, however, a series of Constitutional Amendments (15th, 17th, 19th, 23rd, 24th, and 26th) and passage of certain pieces of legislation have extended voting privileges to more and more citizens.

It is everyone’s civic responsibility to vote, but in order to do so you must be registered. Requirements for registration and registration deadlines vary from state to state and the District of Columbia. North Dakota is the only state that does not require voters to register.

Registration forms may be obtained from the local election officials in your county or from the state’s election office. You can also register to vote when applying for services at:

  • state departments of motor vehicle or drivers’ licensing offices
  • state offices providing public assistance
  • state offices providing State-funded programs for the disabled
  • armed forces recruitment offices

In addition to these locations, many states offer registration opportunities at public libraries, post offices, unemployment offices, public high schools and universities, and through organizations such as the League of Women Voters.

The National Mail Voter Registration Form is the one document that allows you to register to vote from anywhere in the United States. While the form is available online and accepted by most states, not all states accept a computer generated form. Get the answers to all your registration questions and the form from the Federal Election Commission’s (FEC) Web site.

What Kind of a Person Should Sit at this Desk?

•October 1, 2008 • 21 Comments

This is the desk the president of the United States sits at in teh Oval Office of the White house. What kind of a person should sit at this desk? That is the question.

We are kicking off the election with a writing contest We have been talking in our classes about the Presidential Election and what the president does exactly. We came up with a list of jobs the President has 1. Passing Laws, 2. Making a budget for how the country will spend their money, , 3. Making policy which are plans for the countries future, (E.G. the president come up with a plan for education, the environment, the countries defense , the presidents makes plans for every facet of our country. These plans are called his policy. 4. He also puts together a group of experts called a Cabinet to help him make policy and help him decide what to do. 5. He appoints judges on the Supreme court, 6. He works with other nation’s leaders, making decisions on how we will interact with other countries. 7. He makes speeches and keeps the nation informed on how things are going in our country, 8. He leads the armed forces.

This is just part of what a president does. It is as extremely big job. So here comes our writing assignment: What qualities do you think a president needs to have in order to lead the nation. List at least 3-5 qualities or traits you think a person needs to be president. Things like honesty, loyalty, or being strong (tough), being forgiving, having patience, being brave, being kind, and perhaps empathy ( the quality of being able to understand other peoples pain as if it were your own). List the qualities that you think a president should have. Describe how these qualities would help a person leading our country. The entries should be no longer that 1 and 1/2 pages handwritten. All entries must be typed in here. First names, last initial and school. The Deadline is October 16th

Here is a template to help you write the piece “What Qualities do you think a president should have?”
